Je vais me risquer à rappeler que lors de cette publication, je me suis livré au jeu de mot de l’appeler poubellication – je vois qu’il y a des gens qui savent ce que c’est le mot poubelle. We weren’t there for the live performance. This is a video, projected in ‘Say it loud’ and the most remarkable work in the show at District Berlin, a former brewery converted into a place for art.

Then “whoooo, hooooo… ooooooo, aaaaaaa” (sounding like a train whistle), he’s out on the street again, stretched at a low angle, and somewhat strenuously buttressed against the facade of the building, skin against concrete, clinging to the edges of two stones like a mountain climber having no desire or obligation to reach the top.

Jeremiah Day talks as he contorts, stretches and crawls on the sidewalk, in front of a focused small audience, less concerned passers-by and a barking dog.

He occasionally falls, trips over himself, deliberately or accidentally, we don’t need to know. And not for very long. He springs up again, to resume his perilous semi-horizontal climb, seldom standing vertical, mostly horizontal or leaning at a low angle, always unstable, on the brink of and in motion, body bridging dirty horizontal sidewalk and building facade, construction, and talking all along, crawling in the present and talking in the past tense.

“There was this writer who… he would cut the end of stories.” Jeremiah Day crouches as if he were sitting on an invisible low stool, knees bent and arms stretched out horizontally in front of him to keep a temporary balance, a precarious pause and hold on things. “He would finish the stories and then he would cut (brief pause, pant) the ends off.”

Balancing on left knee and foot, he is now in a diagonal pose/pause for a split second, like a low-flying kung-fu master with no enemies, fighting/accepting gravitation/gravity, and the weight of words. “For his work to be realistic (gesture), he believed it had to honor purposelessness (gesture) or the experience of purposelessness.”

(Day jumps) then (lies on his back, knees raised, right arm reaching back, like a brief death, without an inkling of melodrama) “The idea was to bring you through this process (twist) this journey (turn) but not to (reaching out) to clarify the goal (silence) inasmuch as (breathing) having a goal would be…(falls).

Laurent Sauerwein

The video of Jeremiah Day’s performance piece can be seen at District Berlin until Nov.11. It is titled ‘Autonomy’. Info: http://bit.ly/Rd2Caj / Jeremiah Day lives in Berlin.

It is the smallest state in the United States and located on the East Coast, in New England, which is not really New, especially if you look at the roads, in dire need of repair.

Downtown Providence is not in great shape either, but it keeps the robust poetry of its formerly industrial buildings, its beautiful mills of bricks and steel. There are more empty commercial spaces on Westminster Street than in November, the last time we were here. When factories close down, they are converted into lofts. If they are in turn deserted, which could happen if the economic slump gets worse, lofts could turn into thin air.

Perdue dans le fin fond du 19e arrondissement, coinçée contre le périphérique, dans une sorte de courant d’air, la rue Sigmund Freud, telle que l’a rêvée Google Street View.
